Farmers Preparation for the Second Phase of the main crop season.

As we all eagerly wait for the second phase of the 2023/2024 season to start, farmers must apply the best agronomic practises to ensure a great yield in the second phase on the main crop and the light crop.Below some of the best practises cocoa farmers can adopt;

  1. Planting and Replanting:
    • Choose healthy, disease-free planting material.
    • Properly space cocoa trees to allow for optimal growth and sunlight exposure.
    • Regularly replace old or unproductive trees.
  2. Soil Management:
    • Conduct soil tests to determine nutrient deficiencies.
    • Apply organic matter and appropriate fertilizers to maintain soil fertility.
    • Implement erosion control measures to prevent soil degradation.
  3. Pest and Disease Management:
    • Monitor for pests and diseases regularly.
    • Use integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
    • Prune affected branches and remove diseased pods promptly.
  4. Shade Management:
    • Maintain an appropriate shade level for cocoa trees.
    • Plant shade trees to provide protection from direct sunlight.
    • Avoid excessive shade that can hinder cocoa pod development.
  5. Water Management:
    • Ensure consistent and adequate irrigation during dry periods.
    • Avoid waterlogged conditions that can lead to root rot.
  6. Harvest and Post-Harvest Practices:
    • Harvest ripe pods using sharp tools to prevent damage.
    • Ferment and dry cocoa beans properly to enhance flavor and quality.
    • Store dried beans in a cool, dry place to prevent mold growth.
  7. Biodiversity and Conservation:
    • Promote biodiversity by planting other crops alongside cocoa trees.
    • Preserve natural habitats and protect wildlife.
    • Implement sustainable practices to maintain ecosystem balance.
